The 'Whitey' Horton

   Memorial Scholarship Tournament

In the beginning the organization decided the best way to honor their friend, community leader and charter member was to have a scholarship awarded to a deserving island student in his name and next was to find a way to fund it.  So the First Annual Whitey Horton Memorial Golf Tournament was held June 3rd, 1995 at the Palma Sola Golf Club.  Hurricane Allison was approximately 100 miles off the west coast of Anna Maria Island that morning and threatening to postpone the golf tournament.  It was decided that all the golfers wanted to play and after convincing the course G.M. Bob Skelton the foursomes headed out with rain bands and 35 knot squalls blowing in.  Most golfers decided to end their round after 10 holes of play, when the winds and rain became stormy.  We assembled later that evening at Pete Reynard's for the awards, dinner and entertainment.  This first year we were able to raise around $4300.00 to be awarded as scholarship monies, and if you ask any of the golfers that participated in the tournament they will tell you this was one of the most fun tournaments they've ever played in, despite the horrible weather.
